Costa Rica (literally 'rich coast'), officially the Republic of Costa Rica, is  bordered by Nicaragua to the north, Panama to the south-southeast, the Pacific Ocean to the west and south, and the Caribbean Sea to the east. Costa Rica was the first country in the world to constitutionally abolish its army.

SAN JOSÉ

San Jose is the capital and largest city of Costa Rica. It might seem a bit chaotic at first, but soon you will get used to the disastrous traffic, damaged sidewalks (watch out for the wholes in the ground!) and hasting people rushing to work.

Orientation: The curious thing about San Jose is that there are no street names, which makes orientation more difficult. So you should try and find landmarks to get around, such as the Correo, Mercado Central or Plaza de la Cultura.

Security: San Jose is like any other big city, so you should always have a good eye on your things and be aware of your surroundings. Don’t walk into areas where you don’t feel safe and don’t walk on your own in the night. Be sensible, but not paranoid!

Taxis: If you can’t get a bus or if it is late at night you should take a taxi. Always take the registered one (red with a number on the side) as they are safer. Make sure as well that they use the meter (“maria”) so they don’t overcharge you.

CLIMATE

San José City’s elevation gives it a mild climate. The temperature ranges between 15 °C and 26 °C. The rainy season is from May to late November but cloudiness and rainfall can occur during the dry season. Relative humidity tends to range between 60% and 90%. It is basically the same for the rest of the countries, however with some regions experiencing more rainfall than others.
